We are pleased to inform you that the print outsourcing services will begin operations as of 7 December 2009.

To be able to print, you will be required to register at the counter located at MPH 6 between 8.30am to 12.00pm and 1.00pm to 5.30pm from 7 December 2009 to 18 December 2009.

Upon registration, your remaining balance will be transferred to the new system and you will be given a unique pin to be used as your password for printing.

The Centre for Medical Education (CtME), with the assistance of the Library and E-Learning Department have scheduled a continuing series of lunchtime educational sessions in support of advancing e-learning and use of digital resources at IMU.

A
two hour Workshop on Access Medicine, Access Surgery and Access Pharmacy facilitated by Ms Elaine Low of Access Dunia is scheduled for Wednesday, 16 December 2009, 12.00 - 2.00pm in E-Lab 1, Level 3 , Bukit Jalil. This workshop is opened all faculty and students.

Important: How to get in touch with SRC

Dear all,

Please do inform all your batch mates of this.

Of course students are more than welcome to approach council members at all times in person with any concerns they have, but we would like to inform the students of alternative ways. All this will be permanently on the Contact Us page in the SRC blog.

Especially the feedback board in the atrium, as we check it often and we have as of yet never received feedback on it. We assume it is because not many students are aware of this.

Recently we have received a lot of feedback from students and we are very grateful for this. I would like to encourage students to always give us feedback, both positive and negative, and to keep us constantly updated about their concerns.

We are located inside the student lounge, at LG. Our working hours are from 9AM - 6PM on weekdays.
We have an SRC Board in the Atrium which keeps you updated about SRC. It also has a Student Directory and personal contact details for each SRC member.

There is also a feedback board next to the SRC Board for any and all feedback on IMU. SRC does check this board often.


Around IMU there are many phones placed (as shown below). They are all around campus, even in the MPH, PBL area and in the lecture theaters. You can reach SRC by dialling 6601.

Green Lung Carnival Competitions

Dear all,

I'm a student from USM. For your acknowledgment, Green Lung, is a voluntary organization in USM which supports a tobacco-free environment. Green Lung will organize a Green Lung Carnival 2010 in the month of February next year. With this, competitions will be held prior to the carnival.

Quick Announcements

Dear all,

Here are a few quick announcements!
  1. New printers have arrived! You can collect your personal pin number for the printer from MPH 6 or you can ask the IT Department where to collect it from. These printers are outsourced (to outsource means to obtain goods or services from an outside supplier; to contract work out.) and because it is a MYR 2 million ringgit project meant for both BJ and Seremban it had taken a while to get everything settled. I will be emailing soon about what students can get from the printers and the official pricing of printing.
  2. There are now two more PCs in the Student Lounge for students to use. Just a reminder: please switch off the PC once you are done and no one else is using it. Please make sure that even the switches are off because otherwise they are left on overnight and it is a waste of electricity.
  3. We are working on fixing the gym equipment with the assistance of the Gym Club and SSD. We hope students can be slightly patient with us on this as we need to evaluate which equipment is not working and then get it fixed.
  4. The Welfare meeting is on the 15th of December (next Tuesday). If you have any concerns about facilities or student welfare you would like to voice out feel free to let us know. You can contact me or Nirmal or email imusrc@gmail.com. Here are the issues we are bringing up:

Doctors of Tomorrow Forum Summary

Dear all,

Here is a very brief summary of what was discussed during the Doctors of Tomorrow Forum as requested by students. We are trying to get the video uploaded on the I Drive and on CDs for students who were unable to go to view it.

It was really quite an enlightening forum. Each speaker was given 5 minutes to speak and below are my personal notes from the forum.

From Prof Victor Lim: Just a note of caution. Many are expressing their own personal views so don't take everything as the gospel truth. The important thing is to reflect on what has been said and to focus on how to become a good health care professional of tomorrow. Do not be too concerned about the statistics quoted. A good doctor will always be in demand globally.

  • Enabling environment
    • When with the doctor the patient should be able to speak openly and feel safe to express feelings and ask any questions without being made feel stupid.
    • Patients should not be judged by doctors nor should the doctor ever say "Am I the doctor or you?"

      • give support
      • speaking abilities
  • Breaking bad news
    • Most doctors need immense training in this
    • They need to be able to give the patient proper information and support

    • Doctors should not keep a patients condition from the patient just because the family member requested for it.

USMLE marketing research project

Dear all,

A major provider of medical education products is currently recruiting for a market research project on exam revision for MRCP and USMLE exams.

The groups will take place in Penang and Kuala Lumpur between 15th and 17th January 2010 and last 1.5- 2 hours. Attendees will be paid 100 MYR for their time, and refreshments will be provided.

We would like to hear from doctors or medical students who have either:
  • Recently revised for and/or attempted any part of the MRCP (UK) OR
  • Recently revised for and/or attempted any part of the USMLE

Canteen Meeting Summary: Jumbo and Sri Emas

Dear all,

Here is the summary of the recent canteen committee meeting (Tuesday, 8th of December). We are often very demanding of the operators and are always open to them on the feedback we receive from students, and they are always receptive of what we have to tell them.

Having said that, they too have requests for students, which is really only reminders of things that have been said before.

As always, you can find this at the Treasurers blog page, along with summaries of the previous canteen meetings.

What is required from students
  • Please do not use the cafeterias utensils when having outside food as it is an unfair cost to them.
  • There are areas allocated for students to eat outside food. Please do not consume outside food in the cafe as that area is managed by the cafe operators who are renting the premise (meaning that it is paid for by them).
  • Please help to clear up the tables when you finished your meal. Jumbo has placed collection bins/trolley for used crockery/cultery in strategic location around the cafe. This is to help improve the speed of the queue by lessening the manpower needed for cleaning.

Jumbo
  • They are recalibrating the cashier box to make it more efficient and precise. They have also replaced the cashier due to complaints from students.
  • They are going to sort out the pricing of the different bain marie's so that students are aware which one is the one that is priced at RM 3.80 for 2 vege + 1 meat, and the prices of the other one.
  • To shorten queues they will implement a number system where students can immediately order and pay.
  • Price list will be sent to SRC to put on display for all students on the SRC blog.
  • If students want to request a special menu they can do so through SRC who will then pass it to Jumbo to see if it is feasible.
  • Every 2 months they will change the chef to bring a different taste so that it will not always seem the same.
  • They will work on staff attitude towards students.
  • SRC will promote any specials they are having to students through the SRC blog and email.
  • The cafe will now close at 6pm.
  • Staff were reminded to wear masks, hair nets and gloves at all times.
  • They now have a tea time selection which is
    • Curry Puff - RM 0.50
    • Spring Roll - RM 0.50
    • Kuih (5 different flavors) -RM 0.60 each
    • Sandwich (egg mayo/tuna) - RM 2
    • Sausage roll - RM 1.50
Sri Emas
  • It was suggested that they review pricing for the chicken rice and to introduce a cheaper alternative available. They have agreed to provide an option of plain rice to oil rice.
  • Pure Chinese-styled vegetarian meals to be introduced starting January. (even the pots they'll be cooked in will be different).
  • Will propose tea sets to the team for eg.
    • Goreng pisang with tea
    • Hot deserts

IMU goes Greek: Invitation to watch Oedipus the King

With great pleasure and much anticipation, I welcome you to appreciate an adaptation of the Greek tragedy Oedipus the King by the ME108 Humanities selective students.

First performed in 429 BC, Oedipus the King by Sophocles tells the tale of a tragic hero who treads the painful and fearful road to self discovery.

The play will be staged on 16 Dec 2009, 7.00-8.30pm at Audi 1, IMU Bukit Jalil. Admission is free.

Dear all,

Meeting discussing results from Canteen Satisfaction Survey

got the best reviews from canteen satisfaction survey. We will investigate the claims that the auntie is rude and will ask for more variety in the food selection.

De Brio LG We will request for more variety in the food selection.

Sri Emas The pricing of the food is fixed at RM4.00 except for additional request for Chicken Rice. They might bring in Chinese vegetarian food. They too will be asked for more variety in the food selection.

Jumbo We will work with Jumbo to come up with solutions to fix the long queue problem. Pricing is by the scoop so it should no longer be inconsistent. However, we will propose that Jumbo create two different sections, to indicate different price ranges ie. one section for the individual price per item/portion while the other would cover the fixed pricing. We will ask Jumbo to clarify this to students by putting up a paper sign indicating which is which. We will ask them to include more vegetable dishes and ensure all workers serving food wear gloves.

The suggestions for items to be added for tea time will be given to all vendors.

Regarding the stench in the air-conditioned area the Facilities and Management department is working on solutions for this problem.

Also, a reminder to all students that if you buy the outside food please do not use the utensils of the canteen operators, it is an unfair cost to them. Also to maximize the space of the canteen students are requested to avoid placing their bags on the chairs so that other students can use the chairs.

Volunteers for the Seminar on Advances in Stem Cell Therapy (ASCT 2009)

Dear all,

There will be a Seminar on the Advances of Stem Cell Therapy (ASCT 2009) on the following day:

Date : 12 - 13 December (Saturday and Sunday)
Venue : Auditorium 1

In conjunction with this event, we would need volunteers for the following:

Usherers : To usher the guests to the event's venue. Usherers will be placed at the entrance (near the Atrium), some in front of the Library, and some in front of the Audi itself. We'll need around 16 usherers (8 on Sat and Sun respectively).

At the Registration booth : To assist in the registration of the participants and guests. 2 volunteers for Saturday.

Volunteers for both ushering and registration will have a shift from 8 -10am, and will receive a pay of RM10 per shift. Volunteers may apply for both days (Sat and Sun = RM20).

If you are interested, kindly submit your details to your batch reps or via imusrc@gmail.com (name, student ID, contact number, and shift that you wish to apply), by Monday (7 Dec). Dress code for the shift is formal. Thanks.

Locations to eat outside food in IMU

Dear all,

Please note that the following are places where students can eat outside food. When eating at these locations please remember to clean up after yourself.

There are now tables outside of the student lounge for the purpose of bringing outside food there. We will try and get fans installed there as soon as possible as well. Just remember not to eat on the couch as this has proven to form unsightly stains.

Open Day 2010

Dear all,

SSD needs 150 students for the Open Day on 17 Jan 09 from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. The students will be paid RM15 per person if they worked half day. And if it's a full day, they will be paid RM30 per person. Meals will be included.

The Gift of Sight & Kg. Angkat Project

This one-day event will be held on 6 December 2009, 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in Kampung Orang Asli Serendah in Kuala Kubu Bharu. Among the activities are:

· health awareness talk

· children interactive activities

· health awareness exhibitions

· health screening: 1) BMI check-up

2) Lice check-up

3) Blood pressure check-up

4) Eye check-up

5) Deworming medications

1. Currently, we are looking for 15 volunteers to help out for the logistics, food distribution, the exhibition booths, the registration booths, the donation booth, and the health screening booths. Transportation, briefing, training, and a t-shirt will be provided. Those interested can write an email to Muna, the Publicity and Liaison officer, at munaghoz@yahoo.com (with the subject of the email “Kg. Angkat Project Volunteer”) as soon as possible, as this is on a first-come-first-served basis. Please include:

Tutorial on Building Your Own Personal Website

Dear All,

The Centre for Medical Education (CtME), with the assistance of the Learning Resources Dept, has scheduled a continuing series of lunchtime educational sessions in support of advancing e-learning and use of digital resources at IMU. The venue will be E-Lab 1, Level 3, Bukit Jalil.

This week's 1 hour power point workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, 18 November 2009, 12.15 -1.15pm and is opened to all IMU staff and students.

Ice breaking ideas for Student Exploratory Workshop

Dear all,

We are having a Student Exploratory Workshop (SEW) on 10 -11 Dec 2009 and it starts at 8.30 am. This time around, the SEW would include all programmes offered by IMU and hands on practical training for the students. So far, we have about 23 students registered for the workshop.

Anyway, we are looking for ideas on the ice breaking session on the first day (10 Dec). The ice breaking session will take about 30 mins only. We are looking for 10 volunteers to come up with ideas for the session and to execute it.

As you know, SRC 09/10 has already passed it's half-term. As a council we would like to improve ourselves for the benefit of the student body. Since we have another 5 months left we would like it to be the best we can give to you as a council. Therefore it is important that you fill in the SRC Evaluation Form so we can improve for you. 2) Dress Code in the Library


Dear all,


As there have been many incidents of theft and outsiders coming into IMU to use our facilities, the SRC and SSD would like for the library to ensure that the students who use the library abide by the dress code and wear their IMU ID tags at all times.


Therefore, starting from the 16th of November (Monday), the librarians will turn away all students who do not comply to the IMU dress code including neck-ties and the IMU ID tag. Students are requested to take note of this matter and to please abide by the new rule for the everyone's safety.


Also, as a few students have inquired, on the 31st of October the library opened 20 minutes later than usual as the staff on-duty could not start her car (incidently, both staff members are housemates and come to work together). The head librarian would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused.

3) Culture, Ideas and Values Program (CIVP)


Dear all,

This is an invitation for a leadership programme. It is a one month programme that portrays all the leaders in Malaysia as their speaker. The fees for the programme is RM 5000. Please let SRC PR Liaison, Lim Pei Jin, know if anyone is interested.


Introduction

F3 Strategies Berhad organisation is an independent, non-profit international think-tank based in Kuala Lumpur and is primarily involved in research work. Their clients include Malaysian and foreign government ministries and authorities, public and private companies and charitable foundations. Although most of their work is not always visible to the general public, some of their initiatives did become public events. Chief among these was the Global Leadership Forum (GLF) in 2005 and 2006 respectively. In consonant with their objective of sharing knowledge with Malaysians and the world at large, these two events brought thought leaders, industry captains, corporate movers, innovators and futurists, to share their experience, achievements and visions in Kuala Lumpur. Among the luminaries who spoke at both GLFs were Donald Trump, Neil Armstrong, Sir Tim Berners-Lee (creator of world wide web), Edward Eisner (Walt Disney), Shahar Hashemi (founder of Coffee Republic), Aiswarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra (Bollywood to Hollywood stars), Joseph Stiglitz (economic Nobel laureate), Dato' Tony Fernandes (Air Asia), to name a few.

The Leadership Programme

CIVP is yet another pioneering initiative by F3 Strategies Berhad. It is designed to create future Malaysian leaders through one-of-a-kind training programme, incorporating the '9 Intelligences' Programme, promoted by Harvard University's Professor Howard Gardner. CIVP is akin to a "finishing school" to polish their graduating students into well-rounded, world-class human capital.

CIVP is undertaken in conjunction with the
Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and it will be officially launched by the Honourable Minister, YB Dato' Seri Khaled Nordin, on November 14, 2009. The Deputy Prime Minister is expected to become the patron.

It is their pleasure to invite IMU to send their students to this unique training programme. They will allocate 25 places to local private university students and allocation will be treated on first-come-first-serve basis. Total inaugural intake to CIVP is 120 trainees, made up mainly of top students from the public universities.

The organisers are aware that the information they have just given above is sketchy at best. But if they have piqued your interest and should you need further details, they am more than happy to meet you and present CIVP in greater depth at your earliest convenience.

Security Issues Around IMU

Dear All,

Recently we have had issues with outsiders coming into IMU and using student facilities. For the security of the student body outsiders are not allowed to do so. Some have even troubled our students.

Security guards often complain that they are unable to tell the difference between outsiders and students because lots of students come into IMU out of dress code and without their IMU Student IDs. There is also the issue of students being unnecessarily rude and crass with the guards when they are informed that they are not in dress code.

Students must realize that it is for their own safety and well-being that they are to follow the dress code. On a side-note, it is also the expected attire of health professionals.

Therefore it is imperative that all students:
  1. Comply to the Dress Code from 6 AM to 6 PM (even if you are on study break).
  2. Wear their IDs visibly at all times, even after 6 PM.
